Mr. Tow helps "Big" Star

I admit: I never read Via, the AAA periodical that comes to our house since we got our membership. Last night, though, my wife pointed to an article and said, "You might like this one." I'm tempted to say that it's eerie how often my wife is right, but in this case I think it's just a matter of having been married to me for as long as she has. The article involved a "green Volkswagen Bus."

Apparently, Tom Hanks (you know, the movie star) and his brother were tooling around the West Utah Desert in said Bus when they ran out of gas, and Mr. Tow was called upon for help. So, see, now I'm going to have to up my Netflix rating on any movie involving Mr. Hanks. If he drives a Bus, he must be a better actor than I've ever given him credit for (not that I've been especially stingy with credit for that guy anyway).

You can even see a clip on Vimeo (conveniently embedded here) of Mr. Hanks telling the story on the David Letterman Show:

More Christmas Than YOU!

Every now and then a great idea comes to you like a bolt of lightning. While the jury may still be out on whether or not this qualifies as one of those lightning bolts of brilliance, I still can't keep from grinning every time I walk out the front door in the morning.

I present to you the first annual Yule-wagen, the Bah Hum-Bug.

Some might be inclined to point out that the house is already encircled by 150 empty milk carton/luminaries and that a rotting VW carcass might just be going a little too far, but I beg to differ. Some months ago I noticed about six Volkswagens sitting in the equipment yard of one of the contractors that I use. When I pitched the idea of him loaning me one for the holidays he didn't even think twice. His eyes just widened as he exclaimed,"that is the best idea ever!" Not a week later he showed up one evening with a flatbed trailer carrying my Christmas lawn ornament and some heavy machinery to place it. (My parents are just hoping he remembers to come pick it back up after the holidays)

My father graffiti-ed the side, some garland and wreaths were graciously donated and a friend helped string the lights. This much Christmas magic is hard to pass up.

FaceBook Photo of One Sweet Ghia Mod

folksWerks is showing off some SUH-WEEET Karmann Ghia customization. Now, I don't mean to brag, but I had this idea a long time ago, and have even expressed it. If you've been on the CarToons page of wvvw-ut.com, you'll know what I'm talking about. Still, there's no cartoon that can compare with glass and steel, artfully crafted in this way. Well done, folksWerks! Well done!

New Photos on the Club Site - Club Night, March 2010

Sometimes holding the monthly meeting of the Wasatch Vintage Volkswagens Utah VW Club on the second Wednesday of the month kind of bites us in the butt. For example, March 10, 2010, was considerably colder than the previous Wednesday, and next Wednesday promises to be warmer as well. Actually, we do the whole Daylight Savings thing this weekend, setting our clocks forward an hour so that 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday will feature considerably more sunlight than did last night. So last night we got bit. Some would say frostbit. It was cold, to the point where a Billings native might even reach for a jacket...

In spite of the chill, we've seen something of a resurgence in attendance over the past few months that warms my heart. Some parts of the country may not get too excited over ten air-cooled VWs in the same place at the same time, but since the Wasatch Classic VW Show only comes around once a year I have to get my fix where I can.

Hot Tub V-Dub

Should I be surprised that the person improvising a hot tub using a plastic pool has an air-cooled V-Dub parked close by?

The Wasatch Vintage VolksWagens Creed

This was originally on the OLD (2003) version of the WVVW web site, and was recently found and posted to WVVW's Facebook Group page by Laura Gilchrist:

We're not here to solve the world's problems with superior German engineering or march toward global air-cooled domination.

Whether you are a Volks-Nut convinced that the Creator of the Universe drives a '63 ragtop (and that nothing water-cooled is worth spitting on...) or you simply can't escape the shackles of I'd-buy-something-else-but-I'm-stuck-with-it-till-it's-dead-and-it-JUST-WON'T-DIE, or anything in between, our "agenda" is simple:

This car is part of our lives.

We get together and whine about clutches going out. We get together to laugh about getting clocked doing 60 and being genuinely amazed about it.

We get together to drive.

And although it's the old Volkswagen we love, we won't turn you away just because you're not fortunate enough to have one. If you can show up and bring a love for classic, German aircooled automobiles-for-the-people, we want you there.

--I found this in my dad's incredible paper stack of doom (a place where you can't find anything you need). Not sure who wrote it, but I thought it belonged here.

High Time for Something to Do with Utah VWs

Doctor Dave goes web surfing for YOU! I got an e-mail from the Vintage German Motors proprietor a little while ago (last week, was it?), and since I am the consummate e-mail responding, on-top-of-things dude, I'm just now telling you about it. The link I got from Dave pointed to the discussion on the Kustom Coach Werks site about a downright interesting customization. It ain't pretty much, but I could sure use it on MY street.
